When you take a cruise, there are three memorable parts. First, you see some truly unforgettable sights. Second, the food is amazing. There are all-you-can-eat buffets at all hours of the day with fabulous service and atmosphere. Third, the clothes are great. Whether you’re lounging around on deck of the ship or getting gussied up in a full tuxedo for the Captain’s dinner, going all out and looking your best is a great pastime for cruise-goers everywhere.
On a one week cruise you will always have at least one night reserved as Captain’s night. The lucky few will be invited to sit at the Captain’s table. A great honor indeed.
So, how should you be dressed for such an occasion. Is your existing suit OK or do you need to consider buying a new one or renting?
You may not even have a suit. If you are like most people, getting dressed up for dinner is something that is rarely done. That’s what is great about a cruise, you get to do things you wouldn’t normally do in real life.
If you have a tuxedo though, it may pay to bring it along with you on the cruise. Though it may be a bit of a pain having to carry it with you your entire trip, at least you know you will have a suit that fits and looks nice for Captain’s Dinner.
It may be possible to rent a tuxedo on board. For a start, you will have to make sure you reserve it early because they will all surely go, or you will not find one to fit when the time comes.
After you’ve booked your cruise, it’s a good idea to seek out information about evening attire. In most cases, you can expect “black tie” affairs. Wearing a black jacket (single or double breasted is fine) black pants, matching bowtie and vest or cummerbund with a white dress shirt is perfect for most situations.
If reading this is stressing you out because you’re the kind of person who avoids dressing up at all costs, then don’t worry. You can always decline to go to the Captain’s dinner. Attendance isn’t mandatory. The most important thing about going on a cruise in enjoying yourself, so unless you’d enjoy dressing up for dinner you are better off skipping it anyway.
